Offer DescriptionUniversity of Coimbra opens a call for one research fellowship, in the framework of the MiCRoARTiS project “Microwave Fingerprinting Artificial Molecular Motors in Virtual Isolation” (reference: 101040850), funded by the European Union through Horizon Europe programme, call ERC-2021-STG (Starting Grant) in the following conditions:Scientific area: Molecular Physics, Physical Chemistry, Molecular Spectroscopy, Rotational Spectroscopy or related areas.Skills/Qualifications/Admission requirements: Master's in Molecular Physics, Physical Chemistry, Molecular Spectroscopy, Rotational Spectroscopy or related areas, enrolled in a PHD course or in a course not conferring an academic degree in the related areas.“Courses not conferring an academic degree” must be related to the research fellowship's activity type. “Courses not conferring an academic degree” are the courses referred to in paragraph e) of number 3 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006, of 24 March, in the current wording, provided that they are developed in association or cooperation between the higher education institution and one or more R&D units, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph e) of article 3 of the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree or in a course not conferring an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrollment, and proof of enrollment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated candidates to join the microwave spectroscopy group at the Center for Physics of the University of Coimbra and take part in a research project in the field of experimental physical chemistry, structure of matter and molecular nanotechnology. Previous experience in molecular spectroscopy, both experimental and theoretical (quantum chemical calculations), will be favorably considered. Knowledge in metrology, electronics and instrumentation development will also be valued. The candidate must be fluent in the English language. During the first 12 months of the scholarship, the candidate must enroll in the doctoral program in Atomic and Molecular Physics, a mandatory condition for obtaining a doctoral degree at the University of Coimbra.Work plan/ Objectives: The PhD Project involves the implementation of rotational spectroscopy as a scientific tool for studying structure and dynamics of molecules within the framework of molecular nanotechnology. The focus of the studies will be highly functional molecular systems, such as molecular rotors and switches. The project has a strong experimental component in molecular physics, offering the candidate the possibility of developing technical skills to handle advanced instrumentation to perform high resolution broadband rotational spectroscopy measurements. The candidate is expected to develop a competitive skill set for data analysis of high-resolution spectra using specialized software as well as high performance computing as a tool to predict molecular properties. The candidate will join a young, dynamic team, which aims to expand the frontier of current knowledge, whether by designing unprecedented experiments or translating results from multiple sources into new knowledge about molecular organization. The candidate must develop skills in writing and preparing scientific communications at the highest level, such as scientific articles, posters, and oral presentations at national and international conferences. Missions to carry out specialized measurements on large research infrastructures are planned throughout the duration of the project. The candidate will take part in collaborative projects with leading research groups in this area of knowledge.Regime: The attribution of the fellowship does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal labour nature, and the fellowship is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the fellowship. In case of resignation or withdrawal of the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately. Once the selection process is completed, the fellowship contract will be drawn up in accordance with the draft contract provided by the FCT.
